William D. Auten, 82, of rural Milton, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at his home.

Born in Liberty Township, Montour County, on Sept. 27, 1933, he was the son of the late Cyrus and Janice (Springer) Auten. He was married to the former Mary Morgan. His death breaks a marital union of 62 years.

He had attended Danville schools and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had retired from American Home Foods.

William was a member of Follmer Lutheran Church, Milton, where he served on the church council and sang in the choir. He was a Little League coach for many years and enjoyed teaching children baseball. He also enjoyed taking his son hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a former member of the Grange. He loved woodworking and finish carpentry.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Faye Arndt Shaffer, of Milton; a son, Keith R. Auten, of Montville, N.J.; five grandchildren: Ashley Stump, Adam Arndt, Tyler Auten, Meghan Auten and Lauren Auten; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: Harold W. Auten and Gary C. Auten, both of Danville; and three sisters: Joyce Beaver of Danville, Jane V. Stahl of Watsontown and Mary R. Stahl of Milton.

Friends and relatives will be received on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Officiating will be the Rev. Thomas M. Glasoe and burial will follow in Presbyterian Cemetery, McEwensville.
