John Spear was born in Muskingham county, Ohio, Feb. 15, 1842. He came to Iowa soon after the close of the war and married Mary Mellcenia Blackman in 1870. They went to live on their farm in Dallas county, where they resided for fifty years, moving to Valley Junction, Iowa, in 1920. He is survived by his wife and seven children, Mrs. George Huston of Waukee, Iowa, E. O. of Perry, Ia.; R. R. of Los Angeles, Cal.; H. I. of Estherville, Ia., J. D. of Spokane, Wash., Ethel of Valley Junction, Ia., and J. F. of Waukee, Ia., besides twenty-one great grandchildren.
Mr. Spear served in the Civil war for nearly three years. At the time of his death he was a member of the Maple Grove Methodist Episcopal church. He had been in poor health for the past ten years and on Friday, May 27 after a few hours of intense suffering he passed to his reward at the age of 79 years, 2 months, and 12 days. In the passing of Mr. Spear, Dallas county loses one of her most honored and respected pioneers. The funeral services which were largely attended were held at the Booneville church on Tuesday, May 31, conducted by Rev. Eben A. Thomas, the family pastor, and interment was in the Booneville cemetery.
