Robert A. "Bob" White, son of Altha Elizabeth Addington and Mr. White (unknown first name)... see ***UPDATE below! His father was Marion White!

I created this biography in an attempt to honor the brief life of Robert A. White and his noble efforts to care for his family and to give an account of his whereabouts.

Robert is the young man standing in the back right of this photo of Altha Addington and Henry Patrick McCune Family. He is described on the back of the photo as "son of Mrs. Altha White McCune".

Robert's father Mr. White, may have died or his parents divorced because Robert's mother remarried in about 1880 to Henry Patrick McCune. Robert's half-sister, Birdie McCune was born in 1881 at Nocona, Montague Co., Texas. Birdie had a twin brother that only lived two months, and is said to be buried with the relatives Addington in Gainsville (TX?). Robert's half-brother Henry Edgar "Ed" McCune, was born 1883 near Lampassas, Texas and lived there till about 1888, when the family moved to Ft. Sill. The three younger McCune daughters, Agnes b. 1886, Maude b. 1888, and Ethel b. 1891, were born at Fort Sill in Indian Territory (OK).

Robert's step-father Henry McCune, died at Ft. Sill in 1892. His mother then married John James Stewart at Canadian, Oklahoma, in 1894. A son William Glen was born in 1895. Robert's mother died in 1897, in childbirth with twins. Mr. Stewart was unable to care for all of Altha's children after her death. So... Robert, 22 years old and single, took his half-siblings, the McCune children, and made the journey from Ft. Sill to Washita County where he homesteaded on a quarter section of land and they lived in a dugout.

Per his half-sister Ethel McCune Evans..."Because of difficult circumstances raising small children, our brother thought it would be better for us if we were in an orphans' home, so he took the three younger children to the Buckner's Orphans Home in Dallas, Texas, in March, 1899. When on his way back form Dallas to the farm, in what is now Port, Oklahoma, Bob worked at Marietta, Indian Territory, for a few months, where he became ill and died in the fall of 1899".

Robert White died about 24 or 25 years old, only a short time after his efforts to take care of his siblings. An affidavit from the homestead application of the heirs of Robert A. White said his cause of death was from Slow Fever or Typfoid Fever. Witness were A. E. Martin, M.D. and J. S. Scarborough. Robert White's half-sister Birdie McCune and husband Henry Goins were able in 1904 to 'prove up' the farm and obtain the patent.

Robert's half-sister Annie Pierce, b. 1871, in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas, was raised as C. A. White, then as C. A. Pierce by Clemeth Abercrombie Pierce.
"Child of Clemeth Pierce and Altha White is: C. A. White, born 1871. Although a natural illegitimate child by Clem Pierce and Mrs. Altha White, Clem Pierce did fully adopt C. A. White on June 28, 1878. Altha White Consented to Adoption. Recorded Johnson County Adoptions Book R page 176." As indicated above, C. A. White aka C. A. Pierce adoption papers were also recorded in Parker County, Texas.

My grandfather, John Clemeth "Clem" Hamman, son of Annie Pierce and Adam H. Hamman, certainly knew that Birdie McCune Goins was his mother's half-sister, per photos in the family album.

***UPDATE:5/19/2017 - Mr. White's previously unknown first name MARION was discovered in Texas land records. The document was Mrs. Altha White assigning custody of her daughter (Robert's half-sister), C. A. White, to Clemeth Abercrombie Pierce. Document found in Parker County, Texas land records, Vol. R, PG 184.

There is a grave at Simon Cemetery, Love County, Oklahoma that is believed by Jack Durham to be the burial place of Robert A White... it is simply marked... White 1875-1900. (See FAG #14259540)
