He was born July 25, 1930 in Portal, Ga. to Stanmore and Ada Bell Sparks. Throughout his childhood he was known for working in the family peanut business until he began a career at Union Camp in 1949. In the late 60's he began a career in heating and air conditioning, opening Ideal Heating and Air. Buford was a long time member of Garden City Church of God, serving as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and chairman of the Building Committee. As chairman, he was instrumental in the building of the new sanctuary in 1965. He was a productive member of the First Christian Church in Sylvania, Ga. over the past 23 years. He continued working in the heating and air business during the later years of his life. Mr. Sparks also enjoyed restoring homes throughout Georgia and North Carolina.
Buford was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Matthew and Garnett Sparks; sister, Jeanette Lee; and grandson, Patrick Childers.
Mr. Sparks is survived by his daughters, Debbie Sparks Childers (Dr. Stan) and Tiffany Sparks Williams (Cory); a son, Buford Bubba Sparks (Dr. Terri); wife of 37 years, Mary Sparks; brother, Kenneth Sparks (Willene); former wife, Marilyn Sparks; grandchildren, Matthew Sparks, Andrew Sparks, Camilla Williams, Tyler Williams, Dr. Kate Childers Clayton (Ashley); great grandchildren, Caroline Clayton and Kennedy Clayton. The Sparks Family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Dorsey Flanders for his excellent care.
Visitation will be held Tuesday evening January 5th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home, 22757 Hwy 80 E., Statesboro, Ga. 30461 with Pastor George Peavey officiating.
Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Andrew Sparks, Matthew Sparks, Matthew Mixon, Stephen Mixon, Stan Sparks and Greg Sparks.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Christian Church of Sylvania, 103 Azalea Drive, Sylvania, GA 30467.
