Ben A. Kraut peacefully entered into rest Monday, Oct. 17, 2006. Ben was born on Aug. 8, 1917, in Spokane, Wash., to Frank and Tilly Kraut. He lived in Spokane for most of his life and was a member of St. Paschal's Parish in Millwood. In the 1930s, Ben took up the sheet metal trade. A dedicated worker, he worked on the Grand Coulee Dam, and for several different companies in the Spokane area. During World War II, he worked in the Bremerton, Wash., shipyards and as a journeyman foreman in his trade, mentoring many young apprentices. Ben was a very industrious and hard-working person. He built a house in Deer Lake in the 1950s where he and his family enjoyed many summers together. He retired in 1982 from the Sheet Metal Workers Union, and had the time to tap his creative side. Being the artistic person that he was, he crafted many pieces of folk artwork during his retirement years, which he shared with his family and friends. Ben enjoyed square dancing, traveling, sports vehicles, and outdoor activities in our great Northwest. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marge Mattlock; his second wife Helen Hunter; and his son Michael Kraut. Ben is survived by his wife of 32 years, Helen Kraut; two sisters, four sons, three daughters-in-law, a stepson, stepdaughter, 14 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren [names omitted]. Visitation will be at Riplinger Funeral Home on Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Riplinger Funeral Home 4305 N.
