When John was eighteen years of age he moved with his parents to Peoria, IA.

On Feb 3, 1859, he was married to Mary E. Stuart. To this union five children were born, Albert C and one who both died in infancy, and one, Rev. Fred S Bunting, died after reaching manhood and serving our Master as a minister of the gospel for six years.

John enlisted in the Civil War on 11 Feb 1865 in Galesburg IL, as a Private. John was mustered into "F" Co. IL 148th Infantry on 11 Feb 1865 and mustered out on 22 Jul 1865.

He with his family moved to College Springs, IA in the fall of 1866. His wife, Mary died June 18, 1880.

On 5 Dec 1882, John married Laura Jane Quigley (daughter of Dr William Miles & Julia Ann Quigley), who was a faithful mother to his bereaved children. To this union two other children were born. John and his family moved to eastern Nebraska in 1889 where they lived two years. They then returned to College Springs where they have since made their home.

John became a Christian in early life and united with the Presbyterian church. Since 1891 he has been a member of the Methodist church of College Springs.

The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev Enoch Hill. The remains were laid to rest in the Maple Hill cemetery.
