HAZELTON - Ona C. Moore, 88, of Hazelton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Parke View Rehabilitation and Care Center in Burley.

Ona was born October 18, 1927, in Springdale, Idaho, to Leo and Adelaide Clayton. She graduated from Burley High School in 1945, and married her high school sweetheart, Elmer Moore, in 1947.

She began her college education at the Albion State Normal School and, after the last of her children entered grade school, she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at Idaho State University in 1966.

For the next 20 years, Ona taught at Minidoka County High School in the English department. Ona was a gifted teacher, highly regarded by her students and colleagues. During her career, she received many professional awards and accolades. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an organization promoting the professional growth of women educators and excellence in education, and she served as state president, among other offices.

Ona's interests were varied and broad and she was active throughout her life. She loved living on the farm and being part of the family's farming operation. She enjoyed traveling both at home and abroad. She taught Sunday school for many years and participated in charitable fundraisers.

Ona was an exceptionally gracious person, with a beautiful smile that brightened the room and cheered those around her. She was always available to have a conversation and truly enjoyed listening to what was going on in others' lives.

She loved the beauty of nature, whether it was a mountain range, a river, an aspen grove, or the crops growing in the fields outside her dining room window.

Ona had a strong faith in God that sustained her in every aspect of life. For the past 58 years she has been an active member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Ona is survived by her children: Carol Martin (Teodoro), of Hazelton, Christie Moore, of Hazelton, Kent (Peggy) Moore, of Paul, Kay (Bruce) Christensen, of Pocatello, and Robert (Rebecca) Moore, of Declo; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Leola Burr, of Salt Lake City, UT; and a brother, Gene Clayton, of Hickory, NC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Moore; her parents; and two brothers, Dewayne Clayton and Jerry Clayton.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 2410 Miller Ave., in Burley, where friends may call from 10 until 10:45 a.m. preceding the service. Burial will follow at the Paul Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Rasmussen Funeral Home of Burley.
