Miss Maude Wayland, of Roanoke, died suddenly Wednesday, August 10, 1927, at the home of her sister, Mrs. James Broyles, of Elkwood, at whose home she had just arrived for an extended visit. With a brother, Mr. Edgar Wayland, and sister, Miss Martha, she had been living in Roanoke. Tuesday she took the train for a visit to her relatives in this vicinity, and while making the trip became seriously ill, but completed the journey to Elkwood. Arriving at her sister's, everything possible was done for her, but she gradually became worse and Wednesday morning expired.

Miss Wayland was one of a large family, the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Fielding Henry Wayland. She was born and lived practically all of her life in this county, with the exception of a few years spent in Roanoke. She leaves the following brothers and sisters, Mr. Edgar Wayland and Miss Martha Wayland of Roanoke; Mr. James Wayland, of Chicago; Mr. William Wayland of Bluefield, West Virginia; Mr. Robert Wayland and Mrs. James Broyles of Elkwood, and Mrs. Marvin Suddith, of Brightwood, VA.

The funeral services will be Thursday afternoon by Rev. A. C. Walker and the burial will be in the Old School Baptist cemetery beside her kindred.

[Note: Maude was a teacher when she decided her true calling was to heal the sick. At 26, she left home for a Norfolk, Virginia hospital, where she obtained her nursing diploma. Maude died as a result of consumption: tuberculosis.]
