Member of the original quartette of the Hutchinson Family Singers, the most popular American entertainers in the middle 1800's. The group sang close harmony on sentimental, dramatic and comic songs, and was also well known for socially progressive songs promoting such causes as abolition and women's rights. They toured the United States and Great Britain, and played grand theaters in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, London and Dublin, in addition to many small-town churches and civic halls. Their associates included Frederick Douglas, P.T. Barnum and Charles Dickens, and they performed for two U.S. Presidents at the White House. ∼Abigail "Abby" Jemima Hutchinson. Abby's father declared Abby to be "our 16th child". Married Ludlow Patton of New York City. [From BluMoKitty]
