Born June 17, 1919, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late James Washington and Carrie Whitener Travis.
A member of Faith United Church of Christ, he was self-employed by Travis Wall Covering, a lifelong Post 1957 member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the USS Ticonderoga. As a young man, he worked in the Brookford mills.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Cook Travis; a granddaughter, Kristi Thomas; two brothers, Clarence V. and Ted W. Travis; and four sisters, Irene Adams, Nettie Conklin, Colleen Brooks and Ruth Hollar.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Patrick Dyer-DC of Hickory; three sisters, Blanche Winstead, Janelle (Susie) Drum and Doris Sigmon of Hickory; a grandson-in-law, Thomas John Thomas of Kill Devil Hills; two great-granddaughters, Erika Thomas Ritchie and Brittany Thomas of Kill Devil Hills; and a great-great-grandson, Gavin Kristopher McGillvray of Kill Devil Hills.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Randall Cauble at 2 p.m. Sunday in Burke Memorial Park.
