John Alfred Freeburg was born on a train travelling in New York State while his family were emigrating to Iowa. His father Anders Johan Freeburg, pregnant mother Catherine Carlsdotter, and brother Anders Victor Freeburg, had arrived Sept. 28, 1857 in Boston Harbor on the ship called 'Good Speed' from Sweden.

John married Elizabeth L. Jessup on Aug. 29, 1886 in Cedar Junction, Johnson County, Kansas. Lizzie died in May, 1901 and he married Mrs. Mary Jane (Zabrisky) Walker on Dec. 22, 1901 in Cañon City, Fremont, Colorado. ["Colorado Statewide Marriage Index, 1853-2006"]

Mary Jane shows as Divorced in the 1930 Census of Albuquerque while John is living in Santa Cruz, California with James Alonzo White, a bother-in-law of Al's brother, Walter T. Freeburg.

John worked as a house plasterer in Napa, California.
