Promoted to Full Corporal on 1 May 1863.
Mustered Out Company F, 14th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 8 Nov 1864 at Davenport, IA.

Helterbran, J F - J F Helterbran died at his home a quarter of a mile east of Avoca on Friday night at 9:30 pm. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev Wilson. Interment was made at Buttram Chapel cemetery. Mr Helterbran was 68 years of age and was a member of the Christian Church. He came to Benton county in 1890 from Lamar county (Texas). Mr Helterbran leaves a wife and four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom were present when he died. His sons are F M and W B Helterbran, both of Avoca; and his daughters are Mrs J D Williams of Altus, Ark and Mrs W H Teel of Tishomingo, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. His death was caused by blood poisoning. When a young man, Mr Helterbran froze his feet. Over a week ago it became necessary to amputate a part of his right foot. In the death of Mr Helterbran, Benton county loses one of her best citizens.
