Jonathan was reportedly born about 1754. He was the son of Anthony Cook Sr. and Keziah Roberts, and was probably named for his mother's late father, Jonathan Roberts. According to D.A.R. applications, he was the same who served as a private in Capt. John Mott's Company, 1st Regiment, Hunterdon County Militia, during the Revolutionary War. These applications also indicate that he died after 1781.

He married Mary Howell, with whom he had six children, as follows:

1) Keziah, born 6 May 1775--linked below;
2) Anthony, born 21 July 1781--linked below;
3) Richard;
4) Henry, born 3 Mar. 1786--linked below;
5) John, born 11 Feb. 1790--linked below; and
6) Elizabeth, born about Jan. 1790--linked below.
