John N. Staggers was born about 1845. He served as a private in Company K, 17th Regiment Alabama Infantry. He suffered from "paronychia" of the right thigh from his service, and on 28 July 1864, while serving in action on the battlefield near Atlanta, Georgia, he received a gunshot wound to his thumb and index finger.

John N. Staggers lived in Butler County Alabama in 1860. On 13 December 1866, he married Mary Elizabeth Holmes (1 Sept 1846-5 July 1927), the granddaughter of Addison Scarborough. John and Mary married "at Mr. Scarbor's" according to their marriage license. Mary was raised by her maternal grandfather following the death of her parents prior to 1860. After his death, John and Mary moved with her aunts, Nancy, Mary, and Amelia, to Milam County Texas.

John Staggers died in Milam County Texas between 1876 and 1880.
