Cora Woodfin Travis, 97, passed away peacefully Dec. 9, 2015 in Augusta. Her family will gather with friends from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by funeral service at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015 at Augusta United Methodist Church. Burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.
She was born in Howard, Kan. on Oct. 6, 1918 to Jacob Ruble and Gertie (Simpson) Criger. She attended Howard, Kan. and Marmarth, ND schools and one year at the University of North Dakota. In 1943, Cora enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. She served three years in the military as a platoon and company commander at WAC training centers earning the rank of First Lieutenant.
In August 1944, she married Ensign Joseph M. Burris, a Navy fighter pilot, who died one month later in the line of duty.
In September 1946, Cora married John M. Woodfin, father of Marsha Jackson. John worked for Humble Pipeline Co. (now Exxon), and they lived in the oil fields of south Texas. John died in May 1956. After his death, Cora and Marsha moved to Winfield, where she received her BS in Elementary Education from Southwestern College. She taught eight years in the Winfield public school before she received a M. A. in Elementary Counseling. She then served as elementary counselor to USD 470, Arkansas City, until retirement.
In 1979, the Arkansas City Teachers' Association nominated Cora as their Master Teacher of the Year. She was recognized as Kansas School Counselor of the year in 1980 and was named to the Kansas Counselor Hall of Fame for outstanding contributions to counseling in 1983.
In 1987, Cora married Fred Travis, a childhood friends from Howard. Fred died in 1998. In addition to her husbands, Cora was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Ralph, Floyd, George and Dick.
Cora was a member of AUMC, Chapter CU PEO (Winfield), Gamma Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society (Winfield) and a lifetime member of KS Retired Teachers' Association. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Augusta United Methodist Church and Lakepoint Assisted Living of Augusta.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Lakepoint Assisted Living of Augusta and Good Shepherd Hospice.
