Aged Astoria Woman died at Wickert Home, Mrs. Mary E. Plate, born in Germany, emigrated to U.S. 1871.

Mrs. Mary Plate, 90 years old, passed away Thursday at the Wickert convalescent home, where she was being cared for. The aged woman lived alone at her home in Astoria. She had been in failing health for some time. She was aged 90 years, 3 months and 10 days.

Mary Ernstine Helig was born in Saxony County, Germany, June 6, 1855, at the age of 16 she came to America, leaving Germany Jan 1, 1871, in company with her sister Lizzie, who was 2 years older than she. They landed in New York City, USA and proceeded to Pittsburgh, Pa. Jan 21st of the same year and lived there for a time with her Aunt. After a few weeks, Mary found employment with a German family and from that time, supported herself until her marriage Feb. 25, 1875 to Henry Schmidth.

To this union were born 3 children, one boy, and 2 girls, all now deceased. The son dying in childhood and the daughters after coming to womanhood. Mr. Schmidth died early in the year 1884, leaving her with the care of 2 small girls, Clara who later became the wife of George Myers, and Caroline, who married William Klinedinst. She was married to Henry Plate Feb 1, 1886, in Allegheny (now a part of Pittsburgh, Pa.) Immediately with her husband and her 2 daughters she came to the Plate homestead in Illinois where she lived for many years.

Two sons were born to Mr. & Mrs. Plate. Charles of Ipava and George, who preceded her in death, May 7, 1933. Two daughters also preceded her in death. Nora Plate on Dec 2 1904 and Caroline Schmidth Klinedinst a few years later. On August 9, 1909 her home circle was again broken by the death of Mr. Plate. In the old Plate homestead, she reared her own family, also eight stepchildren, sons and daughters by his former marriage.

In August, 1910, Mrs. Plate made her only trip to Germany, where she spent several happy months visiting her aged parents, brothers and sister. After returning to Illinois, she lived with her 2 sons, George and Charles until she moved to Astoria in 1921, where she lived until she was called to the spirit world. The deceased was confirmed in the German Lutheran faith at the age of 14 years and thereafter tried to live her life consistent with various congregations.

Mrs. Plate was known as a woman who lovingly gave herself to the welfare of her family & a willingness to help friends & neighbors when help was needed. She had many friends who regret her passing. Those surviving are a son, Charles Plate, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, & one great-great-grandchild, 5 step children. One brother, Ernest Helig, & a sister Mrs. Ernestine Noll, both of Germany. Burial was made in Ipava Cemetery.
