John Chew, Jr. (1785 - 1841) is well documented as a resident of Greene Co., GA including being enumerated there in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 US Censuses. He was the son of Lt. John Chew, Sr. (1749 - 1838) and Margaret (Reed) Chew (1762 - 1837) of Loudoun Co., VA. The 05 Aug 1834 will of John Chew, Sr. (signed as John Chew, Senior) of Loudoun Co., VA left $1200 dollars to his son, John Chew, Jr. (Loudoun County Circuit Court, Leesburg, Virginia, Probate Book “Y” pages 221-223, (See a copy of will on the FAG memorial dedicated to John Chew, Sr.). Unfortunately, the will doesn't disclose where John Chew, Jr. was living at the time even though his father, John Chew, Sr., knew he was living in Georgia since before 1820. There isn't any direct primary evidence that John Chew, Jr. of Green Co., GA was the son of John Chew, Sr. of Loudoun Co., VA but this father/son relationship was proven using other evidence which is elaborated on below.

John Chew, Jr. married Ann Montfort (Monfort), daughter of John Montfort of New Jersey and his unknown first wife, on 15 Dec 1814 in Greene Co., GA (County Marriage Records, 1828 – 1978, The Georgia Archives, Morrow, Georgia) [See attached marriage license]. John Chew, Jr. owned and operated a hotel in Greensboro, Greene Co., GA for many years and was "prominently known throughout the state as a genial landlord". (End of Quote)

John Chew, Jr. also served as a Justice of the Peace in Greene Co., GA in 1829-1841 as shown in the transcription below.

Further documentation of John Chew, Jr.'s public service states:
Minutes of the Greene Co., GA Ordinary's Court 1816-1828, page 211, reads:
"Upon the application of John Chew, JAILOR (my emphasis), showing that Samuel Greene of Morgan County, is confined for debt in the common jail of this County, and that there is no bond to secure the payment of the lawful fees to the said Jailor for the confinement of the said Greene. Ordered therefore that the said Greene be released instanter (Immediately).

Greene County Live Records, Deeds 1824-1851, Vol. IV, page 73 reads:
"This indenture made 16 September 1826 between John Monfort (John Chew, Jr.'s father-in-law) on the one part and John Chew on the other part, both of aforesaid State and County for consideration in the sum of $3000 paid by the said John Chew to him bargained, sold and granted two lots of land known in the plan of the town of Greensborough as lots number 12 and 67. Recorded October 2, 1826" (End of Quote)

Further land purchases by John Chew, Jr. were recorded:
$500 for lots #108 and #109, recorded January 13, 1827.
$1200 for lot #67 on corner of Broad and East Streets.
$270 bargained pay before December 25, 1827 for better securing note, John Chew has bargained and granted lot #108 and part of #109.

The 1827 and 1828 tax lists of Greensborough, Greene Co., GA state that John Chew, Jr. owned 53 acres of land and 2 lots and improvements in the town of Greensboro (Ref: Georgia Tax Digests [1890]. 140 volumes. Morrow, Georgia: Georgia Archives). [I suspect one of the improved lots contained his hotel mentioned above.]

"On Thursday, March 14, 1833, in the Greene County, Georgia Superior Court Minutes, in the case of John Chew versus Albert T. Green, It appearing to the court that the property levied upon by the above attachment is of a perishable nature, it is on motion of counsel ordered that the property be sold and the proceeds be deposited to the clerk's office to wait the further order of the Court. Signed: Augustus Wallace, Silas Burns, etc. etc., Hardiman Poythress, etc. (petit jurors for the case)."

John Chew, Jr.'s 08 May 1841 Greene Co., GA will mentions his children: John, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret, Virginia, Thomas and William (Ref: Georgia Wills and Probate Records, Vol. A-G, 1786-1877, Will Book “F”, pages 268-269). Although he mentions John, Mary and Elizabeth, he leaves them "Nothing" from his estate. He makes provisions for Margaret, Virginia, Thomas and William as his legatees (heirs) of his estate. His father-in-law, John Monfort, was named as an Executor of his estate. John Chew's wife, Ann (Montfort) Chew, was not mentioned in his will as she predeceased him. John Chew, Jr.'s will was probated on 06 Sep 1841 in Greene Co., GA. (See attached copy of John Chew's will)

NOTE: The key to proving John Chew, Jr.'s father was Lt. John Chew, Sr. of Loudoun Co., VA is based on William Chew's genealogical records. William Chew, son of John Chew, Jr., was mentioned in his 08 May 1841 will. William Chew was born in Greensboro, Greene Co., GA on 12 Nov 1825 and died on 25 Dec 1909 in Annetta, Parker Co., TX. William grew up in Greensboro, Greene Co., GA and married Fannie E. Miller in 02 Jul 1854, in Taylor Co., Georgia. He was variously employed as a farmer, carpenter, clerk and during the Civil War he was detailed to make salt at the sea coast of Georgia. In 1871, William and his family moved to Texas and settled on a farm one mile from Annetta, TX where he cultivated principally corn and cotton. In a biographical sketch (See "Source #2 below) of William Chew of Parker Co., TX which was published in 1895, William Chew stated that, “His parents, John and Ann S. (Monfort) Chew were natives of Virginia and New Jersey, respectively. William Chew also stated that John Chew (Jr.) [his father] kept a hotel in Greensborough (Greene County), Georgia for many years and that his grandfather Chew (Lt. John Chew, Sr.) lived and died in Loudoun County, Virginia.” He also stated that "his sister, L. Chew (Mary Louise Chew) married T. Grout (Jonathan Theodore Grout)". The 1880 and 1900 US Censuses of Parker Co., TX enumerated William Chew and confirm that his father and mother were born in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively. (See William Chew's memorial for more information on the Greene Co., GA Chew's connection to the Chews of Loudoun Co., VA.

Through my efforts, as of 10 Feb 2016, the Jamestowne Society has accepted the proof that John Chew, Jr. of Greene Co., GA was the son of Lt. John Chew, Sr. of Loudoun Co., VA. Thus, all proven descendants of John Chew, Jr. (1785 - 1841) of Greene County, Georgia are eligible for membership in the Jamestowne Society.

The children of John Chew and Ann (Montfort) Chew were:
1) Margaret Ann Chew, b. 15 Sep 1815 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. 26 Oct 1870 Selma, Dallas Co., AL, m. 13 Feb 1834 to James Willis at Greene Co., GA. (Mysteriously, her tombstone states she was the consort of E. W. Peake)
2) Mary Louise (Louisa) Chew, b. 04 Dec 1817 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. 12 Feb 1901 Atlanta Fulton Co., GA, m. 06 Apr 1841 to Jonathan Theodore Grout in Greene Co., GA.
3) John P. H. Chew, b. Aug 1918 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. 12 Apr 1891 San Francisco, CA, m. Unmarried. (He was a forty-niner during California gold rush. The 1880 U. S. Census of Oristimba, Stanislaus Co., CA enumerated John P. H. Chew as a 61 Y/O unmarried sheep herder who states he was born in Georgia and his father and mother were born in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.)
4) Elizabeth Jacobs Chew, b. 1821 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. 1858, m. William J. Morrison on 18 Jan 1842 in Greene Co., GA.
5) Robert M. Chew, b. 1823 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. Probably before 1841 as he wasn't mentioned in his father's will.
6) William Chew, b. 1825 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. 25 Dec 1909 Parker Co., TX.
7) Adeline Chew, b. Abt. 1826 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. She died young and wasn't mentioned in her father's will.
8) Thomas J. Chew, b. 1831 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, m. 09 Dec 1852 to Mary Jane Fountain at Greene Co., GA.
9) Caroline Virginia Chew, b. 1839 Greensboro, Greene Co., GA, d. 28 Oct 1882 Waco, McLennan Co., Texas, m. 05 Nov 1845 to William G. Mobley at Upson Co., GA.
