What follows here is speculative. In 1850, a 7-year-old boy named Clarence Simmons was living with the family of Edward Otis, a sawmill worker in Colebrook. Also in Colebrook at that time was Erastus Simmons, born 1815, a farmer and his son Arthur, born 1835. In1848, Erastus married Rosetta (unknown) 1825-1854, probably a second marriage for him. I speculate that Clarence was a child of the first marriage whose mother died young causing Erestus to place him with a family that could provide the care his father could not.
The above was the result of research by William Noad
