Johnnye Marie Averitt Seaton

Biography
Johnnye was born in the foothills of Tennessee on December 26, 1918 to John Kelly Averitt and Luella Clark Averitt who precede her in death. She was married to the late Grover Cleveland Seaton, Jr. Johnnye and Grover moved to Wilmington after World War II, and raised five children. She was an avid sports fan and dearly loved her North Carolina Tarheels, especially Michael Jordan and Dean Smith. Johnnye retired from New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she was employed as one of the first Patient Representatives. She was instrumental in the inception of many patient programs that are still relevant today and was selected several times in her ten year tenure as Employee of the Month.
Johnnye was actively involved in many different aspects of the community. She was a member of Sunset Park Baptist Church. She served as President of the North Carolina PTA for District 2, and was later honored by them with a Lifetime Membership. She became a charter member of the hospital auxiliary in 1959 and volunteered over 20,000 hours at New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she trained Candy Stripers, worked the Reception Desk and in any other capacity where volunteers were needed. In addition, she volunteered on weekends at the Hospital’s Hospitality House as a house mother helping to provide lodging and food for out of town family members of hospital patients. Johnnye was instrumental in the opening of the first day care center for United Cerebral Palsy in the Wilmington area. She was recognized by the YWCA as Woman of the Year for her many contributions. Throughout her life, she served on and chaired numerous committees and civic organizations. Johnnye always believed in the importance of helping others, a trait she passed on to her children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She believed in giving back to the community. In more recent years, she was an active member of the Red Hat Society, “The Red Snappers”, at Lake Shore Commons and served graciously on the Welcoming Committee for new residents. She enjoyed her weekly Bible Study group at Lakeshore as well. Johnnye had a friendly, outgoing personality and never met a stranger.
Johnnye is survived by her five children, daughters Johnnye Patterson and Sherry Chafin, sons Grover C. Seaton, III, David Seaton, and Charles Seaton along with their spouses. In addition, she had seventeen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren who affectionately called her “Nanta”. Johnnye enjoyed many family vacations at Wrightsville Beach with them along with all the good times and numerous family celebrations. She will be greatly missed by her family, her many friends, and numerous acquaintances.
A celebration of Johnnye’s life will be held at 6:00 pm on Friday, August 15, 2014 at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street in Wilmington, NC. Please come and share your memories of Johnnye with her many family and friends.
