James lived in Burke County, North Carolina (and possibly other counties) and at least 7 of his 16 children were born in North Carolina. He moved his family to North Georgia into Union County around 1840. That part of Union County was later made into Fannin County in 1854.

He and his wife Julia (Uly) Cansler Long had a total of 16 children:
Elizabeth, William, Clarissa A., Mary (Polly), John A., Nancy J., Sarah C., Rose Malinda, Jasper, Conrad, Saphrona, Almeda, Barbara Catherine, James M., Uly Angeline, and Cicero.

Their descendants now number in the thousands across this great land and contribute to every conceivable occupation.
