Samuel Dean Harpe was only 36 years old when he died as the result of a freak accident that occurred in the alleyway on Warren Street, from newspaper accounts I have read. Samuel worked as a mail carrier at the local post office in Tunkhannock and as he was heading home mid-day there was a car blocking Dr. Tewskbury's vehicle from exiting the alley. Dr. Tewksbury enlisted Samuel Harpe's assistance in getting his car out. Sam was standing on the running board when the car hit a large bump causing him to loose his balance and fall to the pavement with the wheels of the vehicle passing over his head. He suffered a fracture at the base of his skull as noted on his Death Certificate. I read where he was immediately carried to the office of Dr. Lazarus on Bridge Street but there was little anyone could do to help him. Samuel Dean Harpe was the son of James P. Harpe and his wife, Hulda "Huttie" Harvey Harpe.

Samuel Dean Harpe's wife was Dorothy Vernon Stark daughter of H. Clymer Stark and Emma Smale Stark. Almost 20 years following her husband's untimely death Dorothy V. Stark Harpe, still a resident of 12 Slocum Street in Tunkhannock, PA remarried on 25 Apr 1940 in Manassas, Virginia John Rudden Fritz. Samuel Dean Harpe left behind two young children, Samuel Dean Harpe, Jr. (1917-1972) and Mildred Smale Harpe Plante (1921-1998).
