WM C. TWEEDY, aged 95 years, 11 months and 13 days, died suddenly at his home in the Acorn Ridge community Tuesday of acute indigestion. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at Fairview by Rev. Virgil Wilson of Essex. Interment was in the church cemetery nearby.
Mr. Tweedy was born August 19, 1842, in Cumberland County, Kentucky of Scotch and German descent. His grandfather Tweedy crossed the ocean among the early colonists who settled in Pennsylvania. They later migrated to Kentucky.
At the age of 19, he answered Lincoln's first call and served three years. He lived 77 years and a day from the time he enlisted until his death, August 2, 1938. Mr. Tweedy married Susan Rough [in Indiana on 22] February 186[7]. To this union were born nine children, one dying in infancy, and the remaining eight lived until October 1936 when his oldest son W. R. Tweedy passed away. Mrs. Tweedy departed this life 31 years ago. The seven surviving children are T. C. Tweedy of near Puxico, Mrs. Cora M. Ben[t]on, and Mrs. Mamie Harbin of Riverside, Illinois, Union L. Tweedy of near Asherville, Clinton Tweedy, Charles Tweedy and Mrs. Frank Glad[d]en of Acorn Ridge. He also leaves 15 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Mr. Tweedy moved to Stoddard County, March 24, 1893 and settled at Acorn Ridge where he continued to live. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge 71 years. In his old days he united with the Methodist Church of Acorn Ridge. In July of this year he attended the 75th anniversary of the famous Gettysburg battle there.
