Gene was born in Eckley, Colorado. He always talked about how much he loved the mountains and the woods. When he was a boy of 14 or 15 he worked for a rancher in the mountains. When I was a young boy he would tell stories of the old ghost mining camps and towns that he backpacked into. He really enjoyed hunting and fishing, and camping out.
In 1945 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, went to boot camp at Great Lakes Training Center near Chicago, IL. He was stationed on the west coast and assigned a radio talker position on a destroyer. This was towards the end of World War II and he was on Guam after it was taken from the Japenese. My mother still has a saber that he brought back from Guam.
After the war ended he was in China just before the communists took over in 1947. He told me that he almost went back into the interior with a missionary group but didn't. He was glad of this because he believes that those missionary's were killed by the communists or warlords.
From 1947 to 1950 he worked as a Plasterer's apprentice here in McCook, NE. I never new this about dad, I ran across this information by accident when I was reading his DD214 discharge papers from the Navy. It listed a prior occupation and gave the dates.
When Korean conflict started he went back into the navy, but instead of the west coast he was on the east coast. He was on a destroyer again, the USS Cone DD866. He visited France and the Mediterinean this tour of duty. He came back to McCook, NE and met my mother. They came back to Cambridge, NE where he owned a service station with a partner.
Shortly after this they moved to Yuma, CO and operated a dairy farm. My brother David was born here. Gene had been taking electronics courses and learning how to repair radios and televisions. When he finished these courses we moved back to McCook, NE and he was a radio tv repairman up until about 1970 when he went to work for what was at that time Electric Hose and Rubber Co. He was a lathe operator and machinist up until he became disabled in 1975.
