Pioneer Citizen Dies Sunday At Aberdeen Home

Was One of Collingsworth County's Most Widely Known Residents

James Jefferson Shaw, one of Collingsworth's best known and most beloved citizens died Sunday, December 22, at 1:12 P.M. at his home in the Aberdeen community,after an illness of only a few hours.
Mr. Shaw had been in failing health for some time, but after a very serious operation performed last summer, he had regained his strength and his many friends and relatives were optimistic regarding his condition. Consequently the news of his death came as a shock to the citizenship of the county.
Mr. Shaw came to this section of the county in January 1917 from Hall County. He was always strong in his support of every project that made for civic or school improvement, never through personal gain, but for the betterment of the community in which he lived. He was a man of upright character, a valued citizen and his family will miss his loving care.
Mr. Shaw was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church. The pastor, Dick Cagle conducted the funeral services Monday, December 23, at 1 O'clock from the first Baptist Church in Wellington. Interment was made in the Vernon Cemetery the following day, where he was laid to rest by the side of his wife who had preceded him in death by some 28 years.
Mr. Shaw was born December 26, 1871 in Johnson County, Texas. He was married to Miss Dolly Gardner on December 21, 1894, to which union four children were born all of whome were at his bedside when the end came.
He is survived by his children who are: Guy Shaw, Dudley Shaw, Bert Shaw and Mrs. Henry York; by nine grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers who are Mrs. Ida Cope of Giles, Mrs. Maggie Rayburn of Mansfield, Mrs.Jennlte Swan of Altus , Mrs. Laura Listenburgh of Oakland, Mo. Chas. Shaw and John Shaw of Hedley, Pallbearers in Wellington were Warren E. Johnson, E. Smith, W.C. Kitner, J.I. Light, J.C. Hampton, J.C. Wall, Tom Wiggins and Bill Wiggins, Ray Goodson of Wellington was in charge of funeral arrangements.
