ROSCOE - Arnold Henry George, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and hero to many, ended his final days peacefully at home in Roscoe next to the bank of the East Rosebud River, Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, leaving behind a legacy of cowboy logic and neighborly traditions. Arnold chose to be remembered simply "as a friend."
Arnold was a lifetime resident of Roscoe, and was born on March 13, 1934, to Alva and Martha George. Growing up on the family's homestead ranch, Arnold's love of the land and the lifestyle led to the realization that he would work the George Family Ranch after attending Roscoe Grade School and graduating from Absarokee High School.
On June 27, 1954, Arnold married Patricia Marcus. Their life on the family ranch revolved around raising cattle, sheep and a hay crop. Two daughters were born and raised following Arnold on wagon trains, annual horse pack trips to Rainbow Lake, and various hunting and fishing excursions. The family ranch was a central gathering place for family, neighbors and other guests. Arnold's skills were many, including sheep shearing every spring, maintaining a successful hunting and guiding operation, and encouraging Patricia with the purchase and operation of the Outdoor Supply in Absarokee. Hunting the surrounding area, golfing at nearby courses, and traveling with the trailer from Alaska to Mexico were retirement highlights. Spending time with grandchildren and other family members was a priority.
Arnold was a past member of the Stillwater Woolgrowers, Beartooth Stockgrowers, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Absarokee School Board, Roscoe Fire District, Roscoe Community Club and the Roscoe Cemetery Board. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia George; two daughters, Connie Keogh and sons Ross and Troy, and Cathy (Paul) Donohoe and children Kayce (David) Arthun, and Kyle Donohoe and his fiance' Anna Hash; two brothers, Alvin T. (Lauretta) George and Stanley (Barbara) George; two sisters, Virginia (John) Mandeville and Mary Ann Campbell; his mother-in-law, Clara Marcus; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family including Miles Keogh, Marlene and Chris Carstens, John and Jeanne Marcus, Margaret Ostrum, Gay and Joe Dingler, and Clay Donohoe and Torian Donohoe.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Absarokee. Following graveside services at 3:30 p.m. at the Roscoe Cemetery, friends and family will gather at the Roscoe Community Center to celebrate Arnold's life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials for this straight talking cowboy be sent to the Roscoe Community Center, Box 81, Roscoe, MT 59071; Immanuel Lutheran Church, Box 343, Absarokee, MT 59001; or Beartooth Hospice, Box 590, Red Lodge, MT 59068. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge assisted the family with arrangements.
