HIGHLAND
Mr. Samuel J. Highland, 83 years old, died at 7:30 o’clock, Saturday night at his home near Carlisle following a long illness.
A life-long resident of Nicholas county, Mr. Highland was widely known and was an honorable and upright citizen. He was twice married, his first wife, Mrs. Georgia House Highland, died 28 years ago and his second wife, Mrs. Ida Dwelley Highland, died 19 years ago. Two children of the first marriage, Mrs. Ben S. Hardwick, of Nicholas county, and Firm Highland, of Lebanon, Ind., survive. He is also survived by two brothers, Hugh Highland, Nicholas county, and James Highland, Roby, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. Jane Bales, Waldon, Ill.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Mathers-Potts Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Estal L. Taylor, and burial followed in the Carlisle cemetery.

Repository: Nicholas Co. Library, Carlisle, KY
Transcribed by: Vernon L. Threlkeld, great-grandnephew of the deceased.

Comment, V. Threlkeld: Samuel was a son of James W. and Mariah (Hinkle) Highland, and grandson of Denman and Amelia (Johnson) Highland. They farmed in Bourbon Co. and birth records prove that Samuel was born there.

Note: The death certificate gives birth year as 1857, but older family and bible records state 1856, as do Bourbon Co. birth records for that year.
