Hershel Lewis "Gus" Conn, Jr., 89, of Lake Charles passed away Thursday, November 12, 2013 in a local hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Conn was born in Vincennes, IN and has lived most of his life in Lake Charles. He was a graduate of Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee where he obtained a Bachelor Degree in Business. Mr. Conn retired with thirty-six years in the Insurance industry. Starting as an adjuster, he traveled extensively to Chicago, Oklahoma, Utah to assist the start of new offices and arrived in Lake Charles where he was named Manager .He served the United States Marine Corps during WWII. He was an avid football and basketball fan, a fan of MSU, LSU and a diehard UT Knoxville fan. Mr. Conn's favorite past time was extreme vegetable gardening as he nurtured an entire lot of fruit trees and vegetables for sixty years. He especially loved sharing the fruit and vegetables with neighbors, family and friends. His greatest accomplishment was having been a friend of Bill's for forty-nine years and sharing his experience as a sobriety spokesman and high schools and Joseph R. Briscoe Treatment Center. "Gus will be most remembered as a man of quiet strength".

He leaves to honor his memory, two sons, Steve Lewis and wife Becky of Meridian, ID and Mark David Conn of Lake Charles; one granddaughter, Jessica Fee and husband Danny of Rosepine; one grandson, Daniel Stroud of Germany; four great-grandchildren, Brooklynne, Taylor, William and Gavin Fee; many nieces and nephews, among them, notably, Michael Wayland of Kingsport, TN.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Shockley Conn; one daughter, Karen Elizabeth Mayeaux; one brother, Lewis Conn; one sister, Mary Wayland and parents, Hershel Lewis Conn, Sr. and Gladys Luenebrink Conn.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Monday, November 16, 2015 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dr. Bobbie Yellott will officiate. Interment will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation Sunday will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and will continue Monday from 8:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
