Barraclough, Lionel Neal, 78, Steele Hollow Road, Julian, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, from pancreatic cancer. Born April 1, 1925 in Barnesboro, he was the son of the late Lionel R. and Mary Josephine (Johncour) Barraclough. He married Signe E. Jensen on June 25, 1949, in Chicago, Ill. Surviving are his wife, Signe; daughters, Kathleen Fergerson of West Monroe, N.Y., Jane Garofoli, and husband, Gary, of Altoona; son Russell, and wife, Patricia, of Julian; four grandchildren, Jesse & Elisabeth Fergerson of West monroe, N.Y., and Andrew and Marie Garofoli of Altoona; and sister, Dr. Joyce A. Sandberg of Pittsburgh. His brothers Ronald and Harold preceded him in death. A 1942 graduate of Barnesboro High School, he later attended St. Francis College, Loretto, after military service. During World War II, he was pharmacist mate with the U.S. Coast Guard, serving aboard the USS Menkar and USS Longbeach in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Barraclough retired from the engineering department of West Penn Power, State College, in 1986, after 20 years of service. He served on the board of trustees of Center Community Hospital for 15 years, from 1970 to 1986. During that time, he was twice elected vice president and served twice as president. He also volunteered as the hospitals snack bar cashier from 1987 to 2001. In the 1980s, he was a board member of the Centre County Airport Authority and served as terminal manager at University Park Airport. He was a member of Coalport Lodge 574 Free and Accepted Masons and life member of American Legion Post 0623, Beech Creek, PA. He was a licensed private pilot. He also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, building birdhouses and spending time with his family and beloved Dalmation, Pepper. A memorial celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2221 North Oak Lane, State College, PA. Interment will be at Port Matilda Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
