The Rev. James T. "Ted" Painter passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Conasauga (Polk County) to the late Samuel L. Painter and Anne Elizabeth Wood Painter of Mingo, W.Va.

Ted graduated in 1949 from Etowah High School in McMinn County where he played in the high school band and was a member of the basketball team.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1950 as an Air Force mechanic. He served 30 months in Germany and took part in the Berlin Airlift for 11 months, where he received a Medal of Freedom. He was employed at Dupont Nylon Co. Hixson for 23 years.

He was called to preach the Gospel in 1964 where he pastored Cog Hill Baptist Church in Etowah for six years. He pastored New Salem Baptist Church of Soddy Daisy for 38 years (from 1970 to 2008) where he retired. Through the leadership of his ministry the church grew. From 1970 to 1980, the church was recognized as being one of the fastest growing churches percentage-wise.

Ted was a member of Masonic Temple Lodge #430 Chattanooga, where he was awarded the God & Country Award from the 16th District. He received his 32nd Degree from Scottish Rite in 1967. He was a member of Alhambra Shrine Temple Chattanooga, where he served as Shrine Chaplain until his death. He was active in the Alhambra Shrine Buggy Patrol for the past three years.

Ted served his family, church, community, and organizations with care and love. With this being said, Ted held to his conviction of John 12:32 "If I (Jesus) be lifted up I will draw all men unto Me." His personal motto was helping people by faith and his life ambition was being used by the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Sue Gaston Painter; daughter, Penny Suzette Painter; seven brothers; and one sister.

Ted leaves behind his brother, Ralph E. Painter of Chattanooga; sister, Betty Anne Thomas of Memphis; three grandchildren, John Hunter Daniel, Ashton Suzette Daniel, and Laura Anne Daniel, all of Hixson; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
