Folk Figure. Borders became known as the "Dust Lady" after being captured on camera in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on New York City. She was working for Bank of America on the 81st floor of the World Trade Center's north tower when two hijacked passenger jets slammed into the Twin Towers. Instead of staying at her desk, as her boss had ordered, she fled from the building and into a street scattered with wounded workers and falling debris. A stranger pulled her into a building lobby just as the north tower collapsed — and it was then that photographer Stan Honda captured her terrified face in the iconic photo that has since been seen around the world. As a result of the attacks, Borders battled severe depression and several addictions to drugs, and would eventually break-up with her partner and lose custody of her two children. In April 2011, she checked herself into rehab and stated later that a key event in her recovery and return to sobriety was learning of the death of Osama bin Laden. In August of 2014, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer and underwent chemotherapy, but died from complications of the disease.
