Carrie Lou Ball (nee Buff), age 87 of Bridgeton, MO, at home with the Lord on Monday, November 9, 2015.

She was born on Wednesday, October 10, 1928 in West Plains, MO, the daughter of the late John Paul and Roxie Ann(nee Wood) Buff.

Beloved wife for 64 years of Dorlyn D. Ball; cherished mother of Janet (Fred) Edwards and Susan (Steve) Drager; dear grandmother of David (Erin) Edwards, Erin (Tyler) Van Zee, Lauren (Philipp) Ruhe, Carolyn (Matthew) Dunand, and Jamie (Bill) Cantrell; dear great-grandmother of Edward Dunand; dear sister of Paul Wayne Buff and the late George Buff and Elizabeth Henry; a dear aunt, great aunt, neighbor and friend to all.

Carrie was born in a small country farm house in West Plains, Missouri, the third of four children. At an early age, she was learning the art of cooking and baking. When she was only 14 years old, her mother passed away from a ruptured appendix. Carrie and her sister, Betty, quickly became the primary caregivers of their older brother, George, who had physical disabilities, and their younger brother, Paul Wayne, who was only two years old at the time of their mother's death. This was the beginning of a lifetime of service to others for Carrie.

Carrie graduated from West Plains High School in 1946. She and Betty moved into an apartment together in town and Carrie began working at the First National Bank of West Plains. During this time, she became active in the Young Women's Auxiliary (YWA) at First Baptist Church of West Plains. It was here she made some lifelong friendships and would meet her true love. The leader of her YWA was the step mother of a young man named Dorlyn Ball, who had recently returned from service as a pilot in the Army Air Force in World War II. She had Carrie pegged as the perfect match for Dorlyn. It was a match that would last for decades to come.

Carrie and Dorlyn were married at First Baptist of West Plains on Sunday, April 15, 1951. They moved to St. Louis where both worked at McDonnell Douglas. They also joined Fee Fee Baptist Church at this time and have remained faithful, active members ever since.

They welcomed their first child, Janet Ann, in 1954 and a second child, Susan Kay, in 1957. Carrie began working at Pattonville Elementary School, first in the cafeteria and a year later, as school secretary. She remained as school secretary until both daughters left elementary school. At this time, she was approached by Fee Fee Baptist Minister of Education, Robert Shrimpton, to work at the church as Church Secretary. She was excited for the opportunity to work for the church she loved so dearly, and served as secretary for several years until her retirement at age 58 in 1986. While she was working as secretary, Dorlyn worked nights at McDonnell Douglas and met her every day for lunch. In the evenings, Carrie would often get together with her sister, Betty and friends, Angie Huddleston and Ann LaClair to play Pinochle. Carrie always made sure she was available at 10pm each night as Dorlyn would call her on his lunch break.

Carrie and Dorlyn enjoyed their retirement years camping around the country, visiting England and France, and spending time with their grandson and three granddaughters. They were able to attend all their weddings and recently welcomed their first great-grandson. In addition, Carrie was a true lover of cats and she and Dorlyn had many over the years. She was often found with a cat curled up on her lap, purring.

Although retired, Carrie continued a life of service. She and Dorlyn were involved in the Meals on Wheels Program, purchasing all the groceries and making deliveries for several years. They viewed this time as an opportunity to minister to the homebound and would not just deliver the meal, but spend time in fellowship. They also cared full time for Carrie's handicapped brother, George, with gentle compassion.

Carrie exuded warmth and love to all she met. She had the gift of hospitality and often displayed this gift through her sharing of delicious homemade cinnamon rolls. When not baking, she enjoyed reading (Nicholas Sparks was one of her favorites), watching Hallmark movies and playing a mean game of dominos with her church friends. She had a competitive streak, challenging her grandchildren to a spirited game of St. Louis Monopoly whenever they came to visit. In one particularly competitive UNO game, Carrie, with a fist full of cards, said with a firm finger on the table, "I want these shuffled better next time."

Above all, Carrie would want to be remembered for her love, trust and faith in God.

Visitation at Fee Fee Baptist Church, 11330 St. Charles Rock Road, Bridgeton, MO on Saturday, November 14 from 9:00am until the Funeral Service at 11:00am. Burial follows at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, St. Ann, MO.
