Excerpts from the 6 Nov 1924 issue of the Seymour Herald, regarding a surprise 90th birthday party for Manning.
"Uncle Billy Manning, as he is generally known, came to Seymour in 1872. For seven years he was in the meat business here and for eight or ten years furnished the people with coal by shipping it in. He was also in the grocery business for some time.
He was associated with J B Loyd, dealing in farm implements and furniture, ans was in the dray business for several years. He clerked in the M A Holshouser clothing store for 14 months and run a branch store for Kirkum, Gilliam and McGregor of Centerville for a season. For the past twenty years he has been the gardener for Seymour and is still quite active for a man of ninety years.
Mr Manning has been a member of the Presbytarian Church since he was twenty years old and has been an elder in the church in Seymour since the church was built in 1874.
He came to Iowa with his parents in March 1850 from Clermont county, Ohio, settling in Lee county, living four years, and then came to Appanoose county in 1854. Later he moved to this city where he still lives.
Mr Manning is also a veteran of the Civil War, Co B 6th Kansas Cavalry. He was taken prisoner for ten months at Tyler, Texas or Camp Ford. He was injured in the pit of the stomach by falling on his saddlehorn while in active service, and as a result of this injury has walked stooped for the past 14 years."
