Joseph P. Granata Jr., age 83, went home to the Lord on Saturday, November 22, 2014, passing away quietly at home with his family at his side.

He blessed his family by his life; living in faithfulness to God and modeling a life lived with integrity and concern for others. Joseph was born in Toledo on St. Joseph's feast day, March 19, 1931, to Joseph and Eleanor (Hertzfeld) Granata. Joe graduated from Toledo Central Catholic and earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Detroit.

He was a devoted husband to his wife of 58 years, Millie Callaghan Granata, and a loving father to Paul, Eileen, Kevin and Anne.

Joe worked for various engineering firms before opening his own civil, structural engineering company, which he ran for 27 years. Joe also made time to teach engineering classes at the University of Toledo. After retiring, Joe returned to work part time until the age of 80. Joseph was referred to by a colleague as an "engineer's engineer."

He was generous with his time and his talent. Joseph was a member of the West Toledo Rotary and the Knights of Columbus. He loved music and over the years sang in St. Catherine's, Christ the King's, and the Men's Diocesan/Community Singers choirs.

His son, Dr. Kevin Granata, who was killed in the 2007 Virginia Tech tragedy; his parents and his brother, Francis Granata, predeceased Joseph. He leaves his loving wife, Millie; son, Paul (Karen); daughters, Eileen and Anne (Steve) Macy; daughter-in-law, Linda Granata; eight grandchildren, William (Deanna) Laney, Alex, Eric, Ellen, Joey and Jimmy Granata, and Mara and Sean Macy; brothers, Chuck (Arlene), Tom (Gloria), Dick (Sue) and David (Karen); sister, Eleanor Turner; sister-in-law, Linda Granata, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., at the Urbanski Funeral Home, 5055 Secor Rd., Toledo. Funeral Services will begin Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church where the Mass of the Resurrection will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Toledo.
