Ray C. Alexander, 89, of Dupont, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at the Waters of Clifty Falls.

He was born Jan. 19, 1917, in Bedford, Ky., the son of Hurley and Mary Heveline Alexander.

Alexander grew up in Trimble County, Ky., and attended school there. He was inducted in the United States Army in September of 1940, and he rose to the rank of Sargeant First Class while serving in World War II. He served in the Army for nine years, followed by 11 years in the Army Reserves. He was discharged on Jan. 19, 1967 at Battle Creek, Mich. He was a farmer and a spot welder for 28 years at Williamson Heater Company, retiring in 1982. He and his wife, Virginia, resided in Dupont for the past 50 years. He enjoyed working in wood crafts and listening to guitar and piano music. He was a member of the Kent Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia A. Hamilton Alexander, whom he married on June 6, 1946; one son, Mike Alexander, and his companion, Barb Hembree, both of Madison; two daughters, Linda Irwin, and her husband, Bob, of North Vernon, and Denise Grigsby and her husband, Ernie, of Kent; one sister, Ozella Layton, of Milton; four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his unnamed infant brother, and one sister, Laverne Richards, in 1990.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Dr., Madison, with burial at the Grandview Memorial Gardens. Full military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 9.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to Kent Christian Church building fund. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
