United States Army General. She was the highest ranking woman serving in the United States Army when she retired in 2005 following a 31 year military career. She served as commander of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, operating military commissaries, base and post exchanges throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, including the Middle East countries of Afghanistan and Iraq. She was a graduate of University of South Carolina in 1970 and Wayne State University in Michigan where she received her master's degree while on active duty with the U.S. military. She was a former staff officer assigned to General Colin Powell when he served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Berlin. She also served as a White House social aide during the administrations of President Ronald Reagan and President George Herbert Walker Bush. In 1998 she married Congressman Martin Frost of Texas in the U.S. Capitol Building. She died at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center following a four year battle with breast cancer at the age of 57.
