Ralph John Tonjes, who lived in Hayward for 47 years, died of heart failure Tuesday, Aug. 23, 1994, at Kaiser Hospital in Hayward. He was 72.
A native of Grand Rapids, Ohio, he was a retired mechanic of 24 years with United Airlines. He was a retired lieutenant commander who served as a naval aviator during World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Tonjes was a member of SIRS No. 6 of San Leandro and the Retired Officers Association. He was an avid golfer and bowler.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Rosemary Tonjes; a daughter, Diane T. Kevern of Hayward; two sons, Gary M. Tonjes of Hayward, and Stephen D Tonjes of San Ramon,; two sisters, Mary Hatfield and Hazel Long, both of Ohio; a brother, Arthur Tonjes of Ohio; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Grissom's San Lorenzo Mortuary, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd., with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward.
