A Saturday outing with my then young son, Jeff, brought us to the Humane Society. I told him firmly,"We are just looking, we are not bringing home any animals." Yeah right.

A beautiful Black Labrador, age unknown, tugged at our heartstrings. Soon I was inside the office filling out the paperwork that would change her life and ours.

Worrying on the way home because we had done this without even consulting my husband, I told Jeff, "the best way to get her past Dad is to ask him to name her." When he saw her he just shook his head, then the naming process began...he said, "Dee, D for dog"...so Dee it was.

Dee was a retriever in every sense of the word...if you threw a tennis ball she would retrieve it...over and over and over. I think she thought tennis balls had been invented just for her. Wherever she went she was on the hunt for a tennis ball. Another retriever characteristic that she possessed was her "soft mouth", I used to think that you could reach into her mouth as far as you could and that she would never bite.

Boy, could she jump. It always amazed us that she could stand inches from a fence and still leap over, no running start was needed and it was like she had springs attached to her feet.

With those same feet could she dig holes.

Her paws left paw prints on our hearts, she is so missed.
