OBITUARY: MRS. SUSAN D. STRAYHORN

Died at her home in this city, on Tuesday night of this week. Mrs. Susan D. Strayhorn at the age of seventy-eight years and ten months. Funeral services were this morning conducted at the home by Rev. K. Homer Tirey after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Granger cemetery. With the passing of this grand lady, it may truly be said that Granger has lost one of the oldest and most beloved inhabitants. Coming here from Georgetown with her honored husband, Capt. J. (sic) M. Strayhorn, more than twenty years ago. It may be said that she [---?---] the town , and when the not unexpected end came, all Granger reverently bowed its head in grief. Two daughters, Mrs. Lee Clark, of Rockdale, and Mrs. M. A. Pipkin, of Granger and two sons, Dr. J. M. Strayhorn, of San Antonio, and Mr. G. Y. Strayhorn, of Granger, (the latter an invalid to whom this gentle mother gave the flower of her life in patient attendance) besides other relatives are left to grieve for her who has been called "Up Yonder." They have the earnest sympathy of our people in this, their great bereavement.

-Granger News, Nov, 1911, as found in the Williamson County Sun, dated November 16, 1911.

NOTE: The cemetery association has no record showing that Susan is buried in the Granger City Cemetery...other than what I have submitted found in her obituary. Her husband, Captain Samuel Marshal Strayhorn's tombstone is the only marker on the Strayhorn burial plot consisting of 12 spaces, ie., Lot 4, Block 6, First Addition. He [died in 1908] is buried on space number 12. It is my belief that Susan [died in 1911] is buried next to him on space number 11 and that their son, George Y. Strayhorn [died in 1924], is buried next to her on space number 10 and that their daughter Mary Alice Pipkin [died in 1931], who had been appointed guardian of George after their parent's passing, is buried next to him on space number 9. Mary's Death Certificate states that she was buried in the Granger Cemetery even though there is no official record that says she is buried there.
