Thurman Holmes "Bill" Brister

Thurman Holmes "Bill" Brister, Sr., passed away October 1, 2015 at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula. Born November 18, 1929 in New Orleans, LA, he mastered multi-media arts in fields such as oils, watercolor, poetry and cartoon. He will truly be missed by those he loved. As a veteran of the Korean War, Bill did duty in the US Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952. While serving his country he was awarded the National Drawing prize of the Marine Corps Institute which was exhibited on the Corps National Tour. In 1960 he held the position of art editor for the New Orleanian magazine while working from his studio in the French Quarter. As a self-taught draftsman he held the position of Senior Hull Designer at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Later he learned residential appraising and worked for Bonnie Brister Real Estate through the seventies into the early eighties. In the middle eighties he owned and operated the Grand Old Attic and Studio in Gautier where he specialized in original art, watercolor as well as oil & acrylics. He remained self employed as a Residential Real Estate Appraiser from the seventies until he retired in 2005. In his lifelong love affair with art and drawing, he became proficient as a cartoonist, caricaturist, portraitist, draftsman, technical illustrator and sign painter. His artwork has been displayed in numerous art shows on the Gulf Coast while the majority of his work remains in private collections. As a member of Alcoholics Anonymous he spent countless hours helping others. He will be remembered for his quick wit and classic southern charm.

He is survived by three sons; Raymond Bryan Brister of Pascagoula. Thurman Brister, Jr., and William "Al" Brister; two daughters; Miriam Hamilton and Janet Courtney all of North Carolina; two brothers, Shelby "Jack" Brister of Montrose, Mississippi and Thomas Edward "Eddie" Brister of Pascagoula. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Johnson Brister; his parents, Marcus Shelby and Bonnie Thurman Brister; and three sisters; Jane Farragut, Grace Godfrey and Shirley Coakley
