2008 obituary. PORTLAND -- Alfreda Delano Babino, left this world on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at a Portland hospital surrounded by her loving family following a struggle with cancer that she met with grace, courage and amazing strength. Alfreda was the epitome of mom, grandmother, great- grandmother, friend and wife always finding a way to see the beauty and potential in those around her and to nurture and celebrate that in both quiet and profound ways. Known as Grammie, Nanny and Gigi to her grandchildren, Alfreda was a regular at their soccer games, swim meets, horse shows, cheerleading competitions, baseball games, dance recitals, plays, and concerts reveling in the joy that these brought to her and to her grandchildren. Alfreda was passionate about her love for her family and used her many talents to convey that as she made beautiful quilts, knit scarves and sweaters, sewed nightgowns, aprons, blankets and dresses and made her signature home cooked meals, cookies, fudge, and cakes for all who came to the house. She enjoyed golf, theater, movies, fishing, cross country skiing, and playing cards and games. Alfreda supported her community giving of her time and self in many special ways. She was active in the annual Maine Children's Cancer Program walk, made regular platelet donations to the Red Cross, sponsored Christian-a young child in the Philippines, was a Eucharistic Minister for St. Joseph's in Zephyrhills, Fla., swung a hammer to help build a Habitat for Humanity house and was the senior member of a three generation team of women for the project and she volunteered at an annual horseshow to benefit Special Olympic athletes. Alfreda retired from Unionmutual after 25 years of dedicated service where she enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to a thriving company and know and work with many incredible people. Prior to that, she was a loving stay at home mom, worked in a nursery school in Northeast Harbor, delighted guest at the Cranberry Inn, and started her work life at the Municipal Office in Lincoln. Alfred was born in Lincoln, on June 2, 1933, to Clarence and Emogene Lancaster Delano. She is predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Vivian Larly Tierney, Sidney Delano, Clint Delano and Melbourne Delano. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 7, at the Dolby & Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham from 4-6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 8, at St. Anne's Church, Main St., Gorham at 10 a.m. Spring burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, North Yarmouth.
