San Antonio, Tex. (AP) -- A football star during the early part of the century who later went into coaching then became an Army officer died yesterday in a San Antonio hospital.

He was Col. Alpha Brumage (ret.), 82.

Brumage played three years of football at Kansas university and was captain of the team in 1903. He was rated an outstanding fullback.

He continued his football career as a coach and was head coach of Ottawa (Kas.) university in 1906 and 1907, at William Jewell in Missouri from 1908 through 1909 and was at Virginia Military Institute in 1911.

Brumage was a native of Kansas and had lived in San Antonio since his retirement 19 years ago.

Alpha Brumage of San Antonio, retirtd Army officer, died Monday morning in Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio.

Funeral services are pending at the Porter Loring Funeral Home in San Antonio. Burial will be in Dallas.

Brumage was the father of Dr. William S. Brumage of Austin and Dr. Robert M. Brumage of Dallas. His widow, Mrs. Betty Brumage of San Antonio, also survives.
