Guy H. Thompson, 72, of 208 S. English Ave. was found dead at 4 p.m. Friday on the basement floor at his home.
Mr. Thompson was discovered by his wife, Florence, with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mrs. Thompson told Coroner W.C. Telford that Thompson had been despondent lately due to ill health.
Mr. Thompson had been a social studies teacher at Springfield High School for 32 years, retiring in 1955.
He held a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree from the University of Illinois.
He was a member of Douglas Avenue Church, Chadwick Lodge 867 AF&AM, National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, and the Springfield Federation of Teachers.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Florence; one brother, Frank C. Thompson of Fannetsburg, Pa.; and one sister, Mrs. John R. Lehman of Chambersburg, Pa.
