Charles was the son of Henry SCHWARTZ (1808–1882, also spelled SWARTZ) and Rebecca HUFFORD (b. June 25, 1830, Hocking Co., Ohio). Charles married Flora May LONGENBACH on May 26, 1886, in Shelby Co., Illinois. Six children were born to the union: Elmer Roy, Oma Dessie, Charles Everett, Leda Leona, Ethel Marie, and a sixth child who died before 1900.

In the early part of their marriage, Charles and Flora lived in Pickaway, Shelby, Co., Illinois, where they farmed and had a general store. By 1910, they had moved to Hettinger Co., North Dakota, where they farmed. By 1930, they were farming in Knowlton, Marathon Co., Wisconsin. The last years of their lives together were on a farm in Grundy Center, Grundy Co., Iowa.
