Contributor Janine Eller Porter recently provided the following clarifications:

"Thomas Hollingsworth's birth was recorded in the Lurgan Monthly Meeting records, Lurgan, Ireland, 'Thomas Hollingsworth second son of Vallantine Hollingsworth and of Ann his wife was bornd at Balleniskrannal aforesaid the begining of the third month Anno Domini, 1661. ' [In 1661 the 1st month was March and the 3rd month was May - thus May, 1661 - no day given.] His death is recorded in the Newark-Kennett Monthly Meeting records, 'Thomas Hollingsworth deceased this Life the second day of the second month 1727 and was buried in the Center Burying Ground.' [April was the 2nd month in 1727. - thus he died April 2, 1727]"

[His birth has been referenced as May, July, and March by various researchers. There are indications that an actual birth record was found for July 1, 1661 but this has never been corroborated. Also, as noted below, his place of death is in dispute. His place of burial is not in dispute. I chose to go with what the majority of family trees stated at the time of writing this biography. The attached page from Colonial Families of the United States is not a primary source, as it fails to state any reference for using the year 1733. The date of April, 1727 is actually correct because his Will was probated on April 13, 1727. His Will mentions his second wife Grace and his sons. SEE Note at bottom of page. There is also a death record of April 2, 1727 in the Quaker Philadelphia Yearly Meeting records.]

Thomas was born in Ballymacrandal (incorrectly referred to as Ballyvickcrannel) in Seagoe Civil Parish, County Armagh. Ballyvickcrannel was the name of his home. Some family trees list his middle name as Valentine. However, no actual source can be found and it may have been unusual for a man of his day to have been given a middle name (according to contributor Lucy Gunthorpe #48132232). He was the son of Valentine Hollingsworth and his first wife, Ann Ree/Wray. They were married on April 7, 1655. Valentine was the son of Henry Hollingsworth (7 Sep 1598 in Ballymacrandal- before Dec 1674 Ballymacrandal) and Katheran Wray (chr April 26 1595 Ballymackrandal-Oct 17 1697 Ballymacrandal). Katheran was the daughter of Valentyne Wraye and Jane Farndell (married February 1588/89), hence the name for Thomas' father. Thomas probably immigrated to Philadelphia with his parents on the ship Antelope in December, 1682. In the 1660's his father Valentine became a member of the Quaker Lurgan Monthly Meeting. Valentine was persecuted for his beliefs at least eight times from 1672 to 1681, often being forced to pay a tithe to the Church of Ireland even though he was no longer a member of that denomination. He left for America in search of religious freedom where he could practice his Quaker beliefs without fear of persecution.

Thomas' first wife was Margaret Calvert (June 24 1661 Kilvergan- often incorrectly listed as Killurgan, Seagoe Civil Parish, Armagh Co. Ireland-August 1 1687 New Castle Co De), daughter of Thomas Calvert and Jane Glasford. They were probably married in 1683 in Salem, New Jersey (others have given a date of May 17 1686 at Rockland Manor, New Castle County, Delaware- but that was after both of their children were born). Margaret was the sister of Thomas' stepmother (his father's second wife) Anne Calvert. Margaret sailed out of Dublin on the ship 'Lion of Liverpool', and arrived in Philadelphia on October 14 1683.

They had the following known children:

1-Margaret Hollingsworth (1684-1745) married Hugh Walker.
2-Abraham 'Abram' Hollingsworth (Jan 19 1685/86 -Nov 1748 Opeckan, VA), married Ann Robinson, daughter of George Robinson and Katherine Hollingsworth

Thomas was married to Grace Cooke on March 31 1692 in the Concord Monthly Meeting in Chester, Pennsylvania. They were the parents of the following known children:

1-Stephen Hollingsworth (Dec 1692 VA)
2-Isaac Hollingsworth (June 16 1693 DE-1699 VA)
3-Elizabeth Hollingsworth (Jan 8 1694/1695 DE) married Thomas Stroude (1694)
4-Hannah Hollingsworth (March 17 1696/1697 DE-1777 DE) married (1) William Dixon on 1 Mar 1717 in Kennett Meeting, New Castle, DE; married (2) John Moore.
5-Thomas Valentine Hollingsworth Jr. (Jan 23 1698/1699-Sept 1 1753) married Judith Lampley in 1723
6-Ann Hollingsworth (July 6 1701 DE-1708 DE)
7-Jacob Hollingsworth (March 4 1704-May 5 1766) married Rachel Chandler in 1729
8-Sarah Hollingsworth (Oct 7 1706)
8-Joseph Hollingsworth (May 11 1709-1757) married Martha Houghton in 1730 and moved to Virginia
8-Grace Hollingsworth (May 9 1712 DE-Dec 1 1739) married Mr. Nugent

Thomas was was a Justice of the Peace, Sheriff, and Surveyor of Chester County, Pennsylvania. His home was Rockland Manor, New Castle County, Delaware, at that time a part of the Providence of Pennsylvania. Rockland Manor was a plantation of nearly a thousand acres on Shelpot Creek in Brandywine Hundred, about five miles north-east of the present City of Wilmington, Delaware. Some family stories say he was killed by a buffalo while hunting with son, Abraham, near North Mountain, eight or nine miles north of Winchester, Virginia, having gone on a hunting expedition with some of the settlers. Others state that he died in Christiana Hundred, Delaware. By far, most family trees state that he died on April 2, 1727. A minority cite a book, Colonial Families of the United States (Vol. VII- page 295), which gives the year as about 1733 (with no exact date or source). Clearly that book is inaccurate in view of historical records. Family Trees that state he died in Delaware probably do so simply because that is where he lived and where his Will was probated.

She also takes issue with the family lore of his Virginia hunting death, stating, "that it appears to be an invention as it cites Kercheval's "History of Valley of Virginia" (1833); upon a review of Kercheval's publication, there is nothing at all written concerning Thomas Hollingsworth." This may be reconsidered after further research.
