Daughter of Andrew Wilson and Anne Elizabeth Anderson, she married Benjamin F Walker Sr in Washington County, Arkansas in 1870. They moved to Texas and farmed in Milam county. Matilda's parents also moved to Milam. Her husband passed away suddenly in in 1883. Widowed with the two youngest of her four boys still at home, she married George Tyler Powers. She then had a daughter and named her after her mother. Annie Adonis Powers was her last child. She and Mr. Powers parted ways soon after the girl was born. Matilda owned a home in Temple with 2 and a half acres of land and a pond where she raised her two boys. Matilda died shortly after her daughter's fifth birthday. Her sons, Benjamin and Hermon, and daughter, Annie were adopted by their Smith relatives in Milam County. The three children stayed close all their lives, and all three eventually relocated to the Houston area.
