My Great Uncle, Ben F Walker was the son of Gil Hampton and Lucinda Walker. He was born on a farm in rural Mississippi and lived there until he was about ten. His family moved to Arkansas and took with them several children that had been orphaned. In Arkansas the family lived in Washington county and had in the household Walker children, Armstrong and Smith children.

Around 1874, Ben moved to Texas to farm along with his brothers Robert and George as well as his adopted brother, William C Smith. He married Matilda Ann Wilson and had Robert L, William C, Ben F Junior and Herman Wesley. William C Smith also married a Wilson girl. On Ben's early death and then that of his widow, William adopted Ben's two boys. He filed the adoption papers in the courthouse of Milam county.

The two boys and their half sister, Annie Powers stayed close all their lives.

The area where the Walker, Smith and Wilson farms were located is now a beautiful pican orchard, with rolling green slopes and gentle brooks. The area cemetery is well maintained by descendants of the early pioneers of this area who give their time and energy to preserve history.
