Sam was married on July 19, 1941, at Seattle, Washington, to Pauline Filmovich.

Sam was born in the family home at 505 North 62nd Street. He and Pauline were introduced to each other by his nephew Leo Wenzel and his wife Winnie. At the time Sam and Leo were working together at Sears, and Pauline and Winnie were working together at the Rhodes Department Store. Sam came by Leo and Winnie’s house unexpected one night to take his nephew and niece to dinner. Pauline was already there in preparation to go to dinner with Leo and Winnie. Sam took them all to dinner, with Pauline becoming his date.

Sam enlisted May 19, 1942, in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in Europe during World War II. He rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant, and was a Bombardier in a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber. He flew 31 missions over Germany. On the 31st mission, in September 1944, a mission he wasn't required to fly, but volunteered for, his plane encountered heavy enemy fire and was badly shot-up. Sam was wounded from shrapnel in the left eye. He lost his eye and was fitted with a glass one. He was honorably discharged from the service on August 27, 1945. His decorations and medals include: the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters (two additional awards), the Purple Heart (for being wounded in battle with an armed enemy), the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal with 3 Overseas Bars, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Battle Stars, and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired from Sears as a Warehouse Manager.
