James R. Nielson, 80, Athens, Georgia, formerly of Atchsion, Kan., died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at his residence.

Mr. Nielson was a research analyst for the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Md., retiring in 1975. He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II and worked with the military team that broke the German code.

Born in Atchison on Jan. 30, 1917, he graduated from a high school there. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from St. Benedict's college in Atchison; a master's degree in language education from the emporia, Kan. State College and a doctorate in Philosophy in romance languages from the University of Iowa.

On June 1, 1941, he married Eleanor J. Pohl in Iowa. She died in 1996.

Mr. Nielson was preceded in death by his parents, James s. and Martha E.

surviving: a son, Lewis J. Athens; a daughter, Jane E. Nielson, Mountain View, Calif.; a sister, Mary E. Prager, Fullerton, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas.
Burial: Family Cemetery, north of Atchison, Kansas.
