Jeremiah J. Field was the 9th of 11 children born to Jeremiah Field (c. 1764-1830) and his wife Eleanor Sherwood (1776-1859), of Randolph County, North Carolina. His paternal grandparents were Colonel William Field, Jr. and his wife Lydia Elswick, and his maternal grandparents were Daniel Sherwood III and his wife Frances Linthicum.

Jeremiah's father died in 1830, and in his will left Jeremiah a tract of land, and aslo $100 for the education of the younger children. Jeremiah may have attended the Union Institute in Randolph County, founded by some of his family connections. (It was later renamed Trinity College, and now known as Duke). Sometime in the early 1840s, I believe Jeremiah left his home in North Carolina and went out to join his brother Hugh, who had moved to Mississippi in the 1830s.

Hugh's wife Catherine (c. 1804-c.1852) had been married prior to her marriage to Hugh, to a man named James L. Rutherford (d. 1835) by whom she had four children. The eldest daughter was Martha Leah Rutherford (1829-aft. 1900) who became Jeremiah's wife sometime around 1849.

In 1850, Jeremiah and Martha were living with Hugh and Catherine and their children. Hugh & Jeremiah were both listed as millwrights. By 1860, Jeremiah and Martha had established their own home.

Jeremiah and Martha had at least six children:

1. Louella C. Field (c. 1850-?) m. Samuel Casabianca Fulger (1847-1916) a Confederate veteran, in 1868. She died before 1894, when he remarried. Children: Ida Leah Delilah Fulger (1869-1950, Mrs. Seymour Dawson), John Jeremiah Fulger (1871-1952), Catherine Cassandra "Katie Cassie" Fulger (1873-1937, Mrs. Busby), Robert L. Fulger (1879-1957), Mary Maxie Fulger (1882-1919, Mrs. B. E. Wilson), Elizabeth Field Fulger (1885-1950, Mrs. Richard Westbrook), Mabel Claire Fulger (1887-1956, Mrs. James Westbrook, brother of Elizabeth's husband).

2. Catherine A. "Katie" Field (1854-1929) m. John Thomas Watkins (1854-1932) in 1876. Children, John Haden Watkins (1877-1978), William Watkins (c. 1878), Kate Field Watkins (1879-1943, Mrs. Emmett Priestly), Mary Watkins (1885-?), Joseph Field Watkins (1888-1913), Wilbur Rainey Watkins (1890-1935), John Thomas Watkins (1891-1986) and Laura Watkins (1893-?).

3. Eleanor Lavacie Field (1855-aft. 1940) never married. She was living at the Old Ladies Home in Jackson, Mississippi in 1940.

4. Emily A. "Emma" Field (1856-1943) m. William S. Newman, his second wife. Three children: Corinna Newman, Albert Earl Newman and O. D. Newman.

5. Thomas Benton Field (1860-1928)m. Emma Martha Slay, lived at Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Children: Elma Field (1888-1965, Mrs. James O. Bickham), Thomas Preston Field (1895-1973), George Yates Field (1898-1966).

6. William E. Field (1866-c. 1901) m. Ona Lee Newman (1869-1934, she was a stepdaughter of his sister Emma). Children: William Almond Field (1887-1977), Lillian Field (1890-1949, Mrs. fred Foshee), Eunice Field (1892-?, Mrs. Lawrence Waller), Rutherford Lee Field (1894-1979), Terrence Mott Field (1897-1982) and Cory Humbert Field (1899-?).

In some cases, the name was spelled "Fields" in later generations.

I am afraid I do not know when Jeremiah died. In 1900, Martha appears to be listed twice on the census, once in Copiah Co., Miss. and once with her son in Tangipoah Parish, Louisiana.

I will add more information when I find it.
