Alert “Al” V. Endahl was born May 24, 1923, to Alfred and Gilma (Bidne) Endahl at Lane, South Dakota. At a young age, he moved with his family to a newly established farm south of Lane. Here he attended Firesteel, a one-room school, for eight years, later attending and graduating from Lane High School in 1941. After farming with his father for several years, he entered the United States Army on October 17, 1945, and was honorably discharged on January 10, 1947.
On February 25, 1946, Alert married Doris Solberg at Hills, Minnesota. Upon his leaving the service, they established their home on the Solberg farm south of Lane, welcoming three children, Vernon, Barbara and Lyle. Desiring to pursue a lifelong career in construction, Alert moved his family to Huron in 1952. For a time he worked with several contractors before establishing his own business, focusing on finishing carpentry. Alert actively participated in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 1176.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was an active member of the American Lutheran Church of Huron for over 60 years. Alert and Doris enjoyed socializing through traveling, dancing and camping. They joined the Belles and Beaus Square Dance Club, and were members of the South Dakota and National Square Dance Campers Association and the Good Sam Campers. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway.
After retiring, Alert spent many enjoyable days with Doris back at the Endahl farm. He took much pride in caring for the buildings and grounds where his parents enjoyed living for over 50 years.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Doris of Huron; three children, Vernon Endahl of Greeley, Colorado, Barbara (Vern) Mascher of Rapid City, and Lyle Endahl (special friend, Ava Katherine Johnson) of Evans, Colorado; three grandchildren, Eric Endahl and Austin Endahl, both of Greeley, Colorado, and Staci Mascher (Ryan) Kucker of Scottsdale, Arizona; three great-granddaughters, Mariska, Ainslie and Lucia Kucker; one sister, Madalyn (Marvin) Pearson of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Endahl of Paradise, California and Lois Forbes of Wessington Springs; thirteen nieces and nephews and their families; several cousins; and friend and neighbor, Peggy Merryfield.
